This is the second year that Alpine Meadows Ski Resort has opened up a tubing area called "Tubeville" just beyond the lodge. The tubing course consists of two steep, long lanes, each with a couple humps and a big half-pipe at the end. There's a moving "magic carpet" escalator to get you to the top of the hill and then a quick, fast ride down to the bottom. We had fun racing each other, spinning, performing running starts, riding backwards, etc. And when you got up some good speed, you might find yourself getting some air at the bottom of the run then doing a 180°. !±8± A Brief History of Alpine Skiing

The history of skiing is an interesting one. As the story goes, skiing was preceded by snowshoeing, or so we think. When Sondre Norheim, a Norwegian now heralded as the "father of modern day skiing", invented the ski binding, skiers were able to turn while moving downhill - "Slalom" (also known as Telmark skiing) was born! Skiers used the new movements and skills more as a practical means of moving from one location to another through the snow but, soon, as better and more effective binding was created, allowing more freedom of movement on the skis, the practice began to morph into one of fun, challenge and finally sport.

In fact, just 75 years ago, very few people had ever heard of Alpine skiing (also known as downhill skiing). Alpine skiing was something only a handful of people knew about and it was predominately practiced in the European Alps. During the evolution of downhill skiing, there were a couple of hotels and overnight lodging accommodations in the Alps that remained open during the winter, but they were few in number and far between. During the winter season they housed a small sprinkling of cold-weather adventurers who came to the Alps to test their newly acquired skills on the snow.

Within a matter of a few decades, however, the Alpine skiing population went from a few hundred to the now ever growing number of forty million! Skiers from all corners of the globe now head to the mountains at the first hint of a good snowfall. With skis in hand they will travel to any of the major mountain chains rising up in forty countries. Every continent, including Antarctica, is home to at least one good skiing mountain.

Entry from: Everest Region, Nepal Entry Title: "Namche Bazaar to Dole (4200m)" Entry: "This morning we woke at 6.15 and had breakfast at 7am (2 boiled eggs, a pancake, toast, fried potato and Masala tea) -- I was stuffed. We headed out at 7.30 am and after about an hour of walking got our first glimpses some snow capped peaks...YAY. It wasn't a perfectly clear day, but it was sunny and clear enough for us to see Ama Dablam and Everest way off in the distance. We got so excitied 'woo hooing' over seeing the first snow caps....now we really feel like we are back in the Himalayas. Ama Dablam means mothers purse in Tibetan. It has such a pretty and distinctive shape. We stopped for lunch at Phortse Tenga at 11.30. I had a massive plate of fried noodles that I barely got through half of (especially after my enormous breakfast). Phortse Tenga is at an altitude of 3680m and medically speaking we should have stopped here overnight as you are only meant to increase your sleeping altitude by around 300-400m each day. However, we skipped this and kept going straight to Dole (at 4200m -- which is an increase of over 700m in sleeping altitude in one day from Namche Bazaar). At lunch we met a lovely French couple.
